Ingredients

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium saucepan (off heat), whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt until evenly combined.

Add the Milk

  • Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to dissolve the dry ingredients and avoid lumps.

Cook the Gravy

  • Place the pan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens — about 4 to 6 minutes. Don’t walk away; it can scorch quickly!

Add Butter and Vanilla

  • Once thickened to a gravy-like consistency, remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Whisk until smooth and glossy.

Serve Warm

  • Pour over warm biscuits, pancakes, or even ice cream for a heavenly treat.

Notes

  • Make it richer: Add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream for extra silkiness.
  • Try different extracts: Swap vanilla for almond or hazelnut for a twist.
  • Serve it Southern-style: Always serve hot over homemade buttermilk biscuits.
