Simple Rice Porridge

This simple rice porridge is creamy, gentle, and comforting. Made with rice, water or milk, and a pinch of salt. Perfect for breakfast or light meals.

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup white rice short- or medium-grain works best (90 g)
  • 3 cups water or milk 720 ml
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter optional but traditional

Method
 

  1. Rinse rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear.
  2. Add rice, water (or milk), and salt to a saucepan.
  3. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  4. Reduce heat to low, cover loosely, and simmer 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until rice is very soft and porridge-like.
  5. Stir in butter if using. Adjust thickness with more liquid if needed.
  6. Serve warm with desired toppings.

Notes

 

  • White rice works best for softness
  • Brown rice takes longer and stays firmer
  • Leftover cooked rice can be used with added liquid
  • This doubles easily for families

  • Soft-cooked egg
  • Splash of broth
