Shoofly Pie

Classic Amish Shoofly Pie made with rich molasses filling and crumb topping. A nostalgic Pennsylvania Dutch recipe perfect for holidays or cozy baking.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch crust. For best results try my Buttery Flaky Pie Crust
  • 1 cup molasses
  • ¾ cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup butter softened
  • Pinch of salt

Method
 

  1. Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, stir together molasses, boiling water, and baking soda. The mixture will foam. Pour into pie crust.
  3. In another bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, butter, and salt until crumbly.
  4. Sprinkle crumb topping evenly over molasses mixture.
  5. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until set in the center and topping is golden.
  6. Cool completely before slicing. Serve with coffee or whipped cream.

Notes

Recipe Notes

  • For a wet-bottom pie, bake until center is just set but still gooey at the base.
  • For a dry-bottom pie, bake a few minutes longer until filling is fully cake-like.
  • Best eaten within 2–3 days.
