Ingredients

  • 454 g ground hamburger 1 lb, 80/20 or 85/15
  • 240 g ketchup 1 cup
  • 60 g water ¼ cup
  • 25 g brown sugar 2 tablespoons
  • 10 g Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons
  • 10 g mustard yellow or Dijon (2 teaspoons)
  • 1 g garlic powder ½ teaspoon
  • 1 g onion powder ½ teaspoon
  • 3 g salt ½ teaspoon

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground hamburger and cook until fully browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  2. Drain excess grease if needed, leaving a small amount for flavor.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and saucy.
  5. If the mixture seems too thin, let it simmer a few minutes longer.
  6. If it becomes too thick, add a splash of water.
  7. Spoon generously onto hamburger buns and serve warm.

Tips for Success

  • For thicker sloppy joes, let the mixture rest off the heat for a few minutes before serving.
  • This recipe is mild; add black pepper if desired.
  • Leftovers reheat well and taste even better the next day.

Storage & Make Ahead

  • Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days
  • Freezer: Freeze cooled sloppy joe mixture for up to 3 months
  • Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat gently on the stove
